The Honorable Shirley Chisholm

Widely known as the first African American woman to seek a major political party nomination as President of the United States, Shirley Chisholm began her political career at the lowest rung of the ladder. It was in Brooklyn's "boss-run Democratic clubhouses," as she described it, that she began establishing her reputation as a questioner of inequities and as a self- described trouble-making maverick — but one to be reckoned with.

Born in New York, Chisholm grew up in Brooklyn where her Barbadian parents survived depression and poverty to give their children college educations. It was during these formative years that her racial awareness grew into a resolve to do something meaningful for the black community.

She began her career in politics in the early 1950's, rising, by strength of will and unswerving belief in purpose, from local clubhouse worker to New York State Assemblywoman to the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1972, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm made history by seriously campaigning for the Democratic party nomination for U.S. President, the first woman of her race to do so.

In February 1982, Rep. Chisholm announced her decision not to seek re- election to Congress, citing a longstanding intention not to remain in politics throughout her productive and creative life. Instead, by writing, teaching, lecturing and traveling, she hopes to create "a new national state of mind that demands peace, prosperity, and equality for all Americans." She cunently holds the Purington Chair at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts and lives part of the year in Palm Coast, Florida.

She is the author of two books: UNBOUGHT AND UNBOSSED, her autobiography; and THE GOOD FlGHT, the story of her 1972 bid for the presidency. She holds a bachelor of arts degree from Brooklyn College, and received the master of arts degree and a professional diploma in educational supervision from Columbia University. She has received honorary doctorates from 3 1 institutions.
